ZERO TOLERANCE

The new policy of a school in Cambridgeshire has sparked controversy. Headmistress Jenkinson-Dix appears, not entirely unlike Dolores Umbridge, set to "raise standards".
A host of new rules have been introduced, as well as zero tolerance for breaking them. A ban on smoking is pretty standard, as is requiring politeness towards teachers. Other rules go much further.

Eating, chewing gum or listening to iPods between lessons is forbidden. The dress code is strict: no make-up or odd socks. Offenders have to spend five hours in detention, with nothing to do except reading a
booklet on "good behaviour". The first day of the new policy, a fifth of the pupils were punished.
Thirteen-year-old Karris got detention three days in a row: once for laughing, once for wearing a bracelet, and once for carrying a mobile phone. This does not mean using the phone: the rules specify that it is enough if it is visible.

Answer the questions
What is the situation like at your school? What is allowed, and what is forbidden? Is the atmosphere in class comfortable? How could it be improved?

  1. Is that a lager or a school???? Rules are very important to have a balanced society but in this case is an exaggeration! In my school cellphone are forbidden only during the lessons time and we must respect a dress code. This is right! I love the atmosphere in my class especially with some friends. From my point of wiew the only way to improve the school is to have a good dialogue with professors and other students.

  2. Ok, I agree in some point because I think that listening to iPods when teacher is speaking is not respectful of teacher, but the different between sin and punishment is a bit large: in other word punish a kid with five hours of detention only because he worn a bracelet ( even if the right question is "what kind of bracelet?" ) is too severe. How said Falcone - and other people after me :) - Is that a lager or a school?

  3. I agree with Roberto and Simone: is it a lager or a school?
Rules are very important when you are with other peolpe, but those rules are too rigid.
In our school, better, in my class is usually a good atmosphere and there is respect for rules.
Still, as Robert says, the dialogue always helps.

  4. I think that the rules are very important but this is an exaggeration. Every students should feel good and go to school shouldn't be boring. I think that theachers shouldn't be less serious about rules and and let it breathe the students, they are human!

  5. I probably suicide myself in a school with rules like that, I agree with Roberto and Simone

  6. I think that rules are important to live well respecting the others and yourself, if you listen music while a person is speaking, for example, you are not respecting him so it's right to forbid it. Carry a mobile at school, without using that, isn't unrespeting to the teacher as well as wearing a bracelet: if you prohibit too much things you are shrinking others' freedom so you are the one which don't respect, and you could end like Dolores Umbrige in Harry Potter.

  8. In the first part of the article I according with the headmistress, because we must always show respect, not only for teachers, but also to people older than us in general; but I think there is a limit to be strict, and I think that the headmistress exceeded, you can not prevent a child to have free expression in a dress, provided he doesn't exaggerate of course, because otherwise he is denied that little freedom he has, also the punishments are very exaggerated (five hours reading a book?!)a muggle Umbridge.
It would appear the ''amplification'' of our principal, -.-
However, as Robert said, I'm not complaining at all of our school or of the our class.
    Having said that I dematerialized

  9. Rules are very important and respect other people , in this case teachers and friends too!
Our school is much different from the one of this article. The biggest differences is that if someone breaks rules He or She won't spend five hours in detention!! As regards my class the atmosphere is comfortable and It's a good thing:D

  10. This kind of rules is very absurd and the comparison with Dolores Umbridge is true. Luckily in my school the bans are right and the atmosphere in class is pleasant.

  11. I think that in a school and in every place we have to respect rules, because when rules are right they're useful to live all together but in this case rules aren't all right. It's right to respect teachers not listening to music when they're talking but Students can't be punished with five hours of detention only because they're wearing a bracelet (no matter what kind of bracelet it is!). I think the headmistress Jenkinson seems very similar to Dolores Umbridge. I hoped that a person like that existed only in films! However fortunately our school isn't like that. We still have the freedom to wear what do we want without risk of detention :) In class the atmosphere is comfortable and the dialogue is the only way to improve our school.

  12. we are crazy! what kind of rules are these? As the great Gaspar says, the school should be a time for sharing and being together! is absurd that no one can dress what he want, of course with a certain attitude, or he can listen to the music in the change of hour. At this point we eliminate the interval and prolong the time to 10 hours a day every day!
in my school the situation is quite good,of course there is something that we can't do at school, like talking to the phone or listening to music when the teach is speaking. But now we can't arrive on delays in the morning or we must do forced work.

  13. Rules are really important because respecting them we can live in a civil society; but rules shouldn't limit our freedom. When this happens it is harmful. So I believe it's unfair punishing a pupil only because he was wearing a bracelet. In our school we have to respect our teachers, follow a dress code and we have to swicth off our cellphones during lessons. The atmosphere in my classroom is comfortable and maybe more dialogue in the class would improve it.

  14. In our school are forbidden the cellphone, too low-cut shirts, the short skirts, to play cards and to take a photo in the building. The rest is alowed. The atmosphere in class is comfortable, but it could be improved with a lot of tolerance.

  15. The rule are important for our life and also at school. But the school is made to teach us, the students, we have only to learn. So it doesn't have to be a larger.. In my class we stay well together and the rules are fair :)

  16. As Roberto said at the beginning...this is a lager, not a school!!! I think that, with rules like these, students will be angry with the school's headmistress...and it won't be a good thing at all!!!

  17. I think that rules are important but don't overdo it

  18. This is not a school, it's a prison. This is abuse of the rules. But I don't understand how someone could attend this school...may be this guys are masochists. Or may be their parents doesn't respect their opinion and force them to attend this school.
